All forms of gambling including cockfighting were made illegal in 1981 by the Indonesian government but cockfights, known as tajen, are tolerated for religious reasons as Balinese Hindus have ceremonies that require blood sacrifice to expel evil spirits. Despite this the gambling is very real and big bets are common. Gamecocks are bred for maximum aggression and fights are usually to the death.
